California Cadet Corps Recognized by U.S. Marine Corps for Advanced Enlistment Opportunities
National recognition highlights the California Cadet Corps’ leadership curriculum, academic structure, and long-standing role in preparing students for college, careers, and public service.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif., June 1, 2025 —
The California Cadet Corps (CACC) has been officially recognized in the 2025 United States Marine Corps Enlistment Processing Manual as a qualifying program for advanced rank upon enlistment.
Under the updated policy, eligible students who complete two academic years of the California Cadet Corps and meet Marine Corps enlistment requirements may qualify to enlist at the pay grade of Private First Class (E-2). The recognition places the California Cadet Corps alongside other nationally recognized leadership education programs and validates the program’s structured, classroom-based leadership curriculum.
This recognition is specifically identified in MCRCO 1100.1B CH-1, Table 3-2, which authorizes advanced enlistment rank for high school graduates who complete two years of JROTC or a “similar accredited military training program (e.g., California Cadet Corps)” with verification through official high school transcripts.
Founded in 1911, the California Cadet Corps is one of California’s oldest school-based leadership programs and currently serves more than 7,500 cadets across over 115 schools throughout the state. The program emphasizes leadership development, experiential learning, civic responsibility, communication, teamwork, wellness, and real-world skill building through hands-on, competency-based experiences.
“This recognition reflects the strength of the California Cadet Corps as a statewide leadership and education program,” said Marine Corps Veteran & CACC Alum, Capt. Zak Lara. “It validates the work being done in classrooms across California to prepare students for college, careers, and public service.”
The recognition followed a detailed review process that included verification of the California Cadet Corps under California Military and Veterans Code sections 500–520, documentation of academic rigor through instructional standards, confirmation of transcript-based graduation credit, and review of the program’s credentialed instructor framework.
The Marine Corps also reviewed the California Cadet Corps’ multi-year leadership development model, statewide school partnerships, curriculum structure, and public-facing program standards before granting recognition.
As part of the review process, the California Cadet Corps demonstrated:
- a standards-based leadership education curriculum
- classroom instruction aligned to academic credit requirements
- credentialed instructional personnel
- statewide accessibility serving diverse student populations across California
The California Cadet Corps continues to focus on total student development by helping students build confidence, discipline, communication skills, accountability, and leadership capacity through experiential learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.
While many cadets pursue higher education, workforce pathways, or civic leadership opportunities after graduation, the updated Marine Corps policy now provides additional recognition for students who choose military service.
The California Cadet Corps would like to thank the United States Marine Corps Recruiting Command for its professionalism, collaboration, and willingness to work closely with the program throughout the review process. This partnership represents an important step forward in recognizing the value of leadership education in California schools.
The California Cadet Corps (CACC) is a California Military Department youth leadership and academic development program serving more than 7,500 cadets across 115+ schools in 15 brigades statewide. Founded in 1911, CACC provides a structured, credentialed leadership curriculum aligned with California’s College/Career Indicator (CALPADS code 9373) at no cost to students or schools.
